Excellent Options for Fire and Smoke Damper Verification

Fire and smoke damper verification is a federally mandated process that applies to a number of commercial and industrial businesses. Health care facilities are required to perform inspection and operation verification of any existing fire and smoke damper sets in their air handling systems, as required and outlined in NFPA 90A - 2009.

This requirement, also included in inspections by the Joint Commission on Accreditation, State Health Departments and others, is quoted below.

Reprinted from NFPA 90A, 2015 Edition
  • Fire dampers and ceiling dampers shall be maintained in accordance with NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives.
  • Smoke dampers shall be maintained in accordance with NFPA 105, Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives.
Reprinted from NFPA 80, 2013 Edition:
  • 19.4.1 Each damper shall be tested and inspected 1 year after installation.
  • The test and inspection frequency shall then be every 4 years, except in hospitals, where the frequency shall be every 6 years.
Please note that these are guidelines - local and Federal agencies may require a different inspection frequency.
